James Walker Court 271

Address: James Walker Court
James Walker Court

James “Scotty” Walker was the Police Chief (and entire force) for 18 years in Markham Village, and was also the relief officer, dog catcher, and any other duties that required a community minded person. For some years he was the sole policeman for the Township as well as the Village.

He was born in Scotland, came to Canada as a young man and worked for the Toronto Street Railway. He went overseas with the 20th Battalion and was twice wounded. On his return he again worked for the T.S.R. until he came to Markham in 1925. In addition to being a policeman he was a market gardener, an honourary member of the Markham Veterans’ Association and a member of the Oddfellows Lodge.

The Street Dedication was held on June 11 at 11:30 am. The Street Sign was unveiled by Deputy Mayor Frank Scarpitti.

In keeping with the Town’s motto “Leading While Remembering”
Caliber Homes, a leading community builder, has chosen the street name to honour one of Markham’s distinguished early residents.
